Many foreign suppliers from Avaya, Nortel, Cisco, Siemens, to Alcatel-Lucent and others have struggled with the Japanese market for telephone systems (PBX). It is much the same story for Korea, but of course the local players have varied. For Japan, Cisco has tried with little visible success to market it’s UC-500 product for small offices. Although many installers have become ‘Cisco certified’, there are little sales to match the efforts. The market continues to gravitate back towards the local brands, especially that of NEC. Of course there are the Panasonics, Iwatsu, Fujitsu, and various other brands but it is NEC who still owns the market share according to the most recent surveys.

Comparing a phone system (AKA PBX or IPT) from abroad to local systems gives you a considerable variable in cost. For Avaya or Cisco, equipment for a 30 person office with installation could easily use up a 5-6 million yen budget. An NEC system would likely come in closer to 3-4 million Yen installed. Although the Japanese brands are cheaper, they still have feature limitations especially when compared with western legacy brands for voice services.

In Japan, we have seen the rise of people providing hosted PBX services. AINEO is famous for installation and maintenance of systems from NEC, NorTel, Cisco, Avaya, and (from 2009) ShoreTel. For a small office these systems could be too expensive for a small office budget.

From 2008, AINEO put our time and effort behind messaging and web in the building of the cloud services. In the meantime in Tokyo, we’ve seen startup companies rise up pushing Cisco IPT, the open source Asterisk platform, and even some hybrid hosted IPT. We found the Cisco people way over-priced and unstable, the Asterisk people have a voice quality issues, and the local hybrid systems not really taking off. The idea is good because people want more features such as

-Easier to use conferencing
-Integration with your desktop computer
-Vmail coming in as email attachments
-Contact center reporting, queuing, as well as responses via phone, web, and messaging

Well, as AINEO has been in voice services (PBX) longer than any of the other providers with over 6000 installed terminals, we see the need for simple, high-quality but cost effective and reliable systems, we have decided to add AINEO Secure IPT to our AINEO Secure Cloud service.

We have built the service on ShoreTel technology and have found it extremely high quality, cost effective, and brilliantly simple.

We are doing better testing now in offices around the Kanto plain in Ginza, Nihonbashi, Akabane, and outside Tokyo. It is great to see our systems work as one big reliable system.
Be watching our AINEO Secure blog as we share more through the beta testing. If you would like to trial the service, please contact our product development team. More to come!

In June of 2008, AINEO led the way by being one of the first groupware service providers in Japan.

We saw the need for people to be able to share schedules (along with mail, tasks, and documents), deal with spam and other security threats, and reliability issues that most companies have with messaging and the web.

AINEO became a Microsoft Service Provider taking advantage of our seasoned Windows Server team. We also took advantage of our quiver full of LINUX expert engineers. We have built an amazing service with redundancy, reliability, security that most companies have no access to. It has been burned in. All ordering, support tickets and information is accessible via the web. If you want to call, you can catch our bright, quick, and flexible team at 03-5833-3366 or +81 3 5833 3366 for international partners.

Web 2.0. Salesforce.com. Social networking. Guerilla marketing. Cloud computing. These are terms that are bandied about in businesses all over the globe. But what do they mean exactly? More specifically, how might they impact on operational and capital expenses? What are the benefits of such innovations and what are the risks to businesses? In today’s rapidly changing environment what must the CEO, CFO and CIO need to know in order to make the right decisions when it comes to client information? And when it comes to Japan, where real-estate related operational expenses are really high, will the cloud help you reduce your back-office footprint?

Google is a phenomenal company. They have not only invented their own business model but that have become the leader in that field and held the majority of that web search market from their inception. They are well managed and a company to be admired by any serious businessperson. In IT, we are very glad to have them as we have better access to information when we troubleshoot some new issues.

When Gmail was first introduced, we heard the mythic sirens of people in information technology saying not to put your email on a service that is provided for free by a data mining company. Especially not on a service that scans your email content. At the time it seemed a bit paranoid that someone would say that. However, with recent events it seems that this is something to be considered seriously because whoever hosts your email, your documents, and other intellectual property will have access to it if they are the administrator.

An American CEO of a large US equipment manufacturer recently visiting Japan commented that “Google makes money by knowing as much as they can about you”. The recent action by the German government against Google regarding ‘accidently’ collecting email, photos, WIFI information and any other unprotected transmissions on wireless home network (WIFI) as their cars drove through German neighborhoods seemed to have brought things to a head. Google has been ‘accidently’ doing this since 2006, in 30 countries. They offered their apologies.

Considering the duration of this accident and the volume of locations, it would seem more deliberate as the majority of comments on the news sites seem to note. The German government also seems to think the same thing and is escalating the issue and questioning the actions and intensions of Google.

With this comment in mind, please take a moment to look at Google’s services. They seem to want to know,

1)Who you talk to- Google Apps/Gmail, Google Chat

2) Where you live- Google Maps, Gmail (which records the IP address of your home or office where you login)

3) What you are working on and thinking about- Google Docs/Google Search

4) What you are interested in- Google Search (based on what you search for)

5) What you are watching and how long- Youtube.com

6) What news, topics and issues are interesting to you- Google News

7) Everything about your website visitors, referrals, duration on the sites- Google Analytics

8) What you want to buy- Google Shopping

9) What you and your friends look like- Picasso/Photos/Google Video

10) What you are doing today, where you are going, and who you are meeting- Google Calendar

If you sign up for Google services, it seems you are giving them your information on a silver platter. The more you use the services, the better profile they get of you.
We have to realize, that it is not just Google that is studying you to use your information to make money. Amazon has the Kindle that knows what books you are reading and what page you are on (they know what you are buying based on your purchase history). eBay knows what you buy and sell if you use them. Microsoft knows a bit about you from their passport and Hotmail services. Facebook seems to be the master of privacy issues these days, but people continue to use them. The Economist ran an interesting article on this earlier in 2010.

In conclusion, Google is a great company with great services that are mostly all free. What benefit is it for Google to offer these services for no charge? Does anyone ever click on this adverts on the right side in Gmail? It would seem not, as many bloggers describe it as ‘google blindness’ when you don’t see the adverts any more.

You have to decide as it is your information. Our intension is just to get you thinking about what you are doing with your data and to get you thinking about how they are using it. We must also keep in mind, what one company has can be accessed by the government of the nation by simple subpoena in many cases whether they are just or tyrannical. Is it wise to have too many eggs in one basket? You be the judge.

As we went to a lunch meeting in Ginza we saw three people lined up in front of the Ginza Apple store to start waiting for the opportunity to walk in and buy an iPad. There were three people there. All males, all young with probably too much time on their hands.

After coming back from lunch, there were ten people in line and television camera’s and microphones with people from the Tokyo TV stations interviewing the guys sitting there with their camping chairs, books, and computers to keep them busy.

Let’s watch and see how much this product will catch on in Japan. Will it be a hit in the land of trains and portable everything or just a proverbial flash in the pan? Will keep you posted.

AINEO ordered our iPad for demonstration of applications we develop. It arrives tomorrow and we don’t have to stand in line!

For months, the promises of Apple’s Steve Job’s that we would have this magical device have been ringing in the US. Although not as hot as the iPhone, the iPad has reportedly sold 1M units in the US in one month.

Apple has done a wonderful job of planning, hyping, and apparently designing their product before getting it on the market. Many of the early adopters have already bought the units and are excited to have this new toy. Others have described the iPad as a no need for two different reasons-

1)	We’ll let the early adopters work out all the kinks in the product and buy the second generation.
2)	I have a laptop, I have a BlackBerry and/or and iPhone, why do I need anything in between?

Japan is the land of portables. The world’s best laptops (locally known as notebook PCs) are hot in this island nation. Although China may be catching up due its huge population and production power, Japan is still a world economic power, second only to the United States. (With the US’s uncontrolled government spending this may change and be the sunset for the American empire). That makes Japan a perfect target for the Apple’s marketing machine.

The Japanese have joined the iPad bandwagon. Today (May 10, 2010), sales began for the iPad in Japan, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Switzerland and the UK. Although you can order it online (which AINEO did), we still saw business people (the majority were men), lined up at the largest electronics store in the famous electronics area of Tokyo, Akihabara. What do people in Japan like to line up so much?

In Japan, the devices will start arriving 28 May. AINEO has been doing development work for both the iPhone and the iPad in our media business. Although, we have one team member with a device, we’ll be giving you feedback as we begin using the product within the company.

1) Start with what you have
Don’t go into debt to start your business. Start small and with what you have.

2) Do it yourself
You may think you need to partner with someone to start a business. If you can go it alone, do it. It will save you a lot of time.

3) Figure it out
When you get stuck with something. Stick with it. Figure it out. Don’t throw away everything because you get stumped in one area.

4) Develop What You’ve Got
Many folks try to go off in other business areas. If you are a restaurant guy, develop things that work in that area. Trying to start a software development business may just eat up a lot of your time.

5) It’s all timing and opportunity
Many people think you have to have an MBA to start a business. In Tokyo, a friend of mine from New Zealand runs a business of multi-millions. The guy hasn’t even graduated from High School.

Starting a business is not easy, you will work longer hours, there are many sacrifices, and there is always a chance you may not make it.

If you work in a great company, help develop that team there and play on the power of the team. There is a lot to be said about teamwork.

With the rise of Web 2.0 we’ve seen a huge increase in web-based technology. One major contributor to these changes in the web and its usefulness has been Google, Inc. Google is an advertising company that has made the internet very accessible through its advertising-income based search engine. They are constantly thinking of new ways to get people clicking on their adverts. The Google tagline has been ‘Do No evil’ as they offer many services based on bringing people into their search engine. They have online maps, satellite maps, pricing comparison sites, web statistics, and various other services that tie back into their web services.

One of these major services is Gmail. Gmail is a rebuild of messaging as we know it, for the ground up. It has built in email, chat, video, online calendars, online documents, archiving and many other features. Unlike other email services such as Hotmail, Yahoo, and others, this free email service is designed to scan the content of every email in the mailbox so that Google might serve targeted advertisements to user based on their emails. They can ‘profile’ a user to establish their likes, dislikes, and areas of interest. Many privacy advocates raised concerns about emails being scanned for anything other than security and virus threats.

In February 2007, Google went into the hosting business. They started a service called Google Apps. Google Apps is an online adaption of their Gmail service. The difference is that a company can use their own company domain on the Google service. Individuals can also use personal vanity domains on the service. They provide the service for free saying, don’t throw anything away. They give you free POP3 email, IMAP, online schedule sharing, mobile access… basically everything other companies are actually charging to support. How can they do this? The answer to most is online advertising.
As the IT managers for the best companies in the Asia Pacific region, AINEO has tested Gmail/Google Apps two separate times so that we can give proper feedback to our client partners.   A couple of our engineers use it for personal email.  We are very familiar with the services as well as many other services in Japan and abroad.  We have officially tested Google Apps once in December 2008 and again in January 2010.  Here are some of our observations about their service that we can share;

Apps Observations-
-Importing of email could not be done via IMAP to IMAP accounts as it timed out repeatedly. We had to use POP3 and let Google Apps/Gmail slowly import 200 messages at a time.

-As paid users ($50 USD/user/year), we were still intermittently served up ads from our mail scanned even after ‘turning off’ this service several times.

-The service is supposed to work with RIM’s BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES Server). This is a bit misleading as those sites wanting to use BlackBerry have to install a BES server themselves. Google provides a BES software connector for those users who have paid accounts.

-Paid users are on the exact same servers as free users. There seems to be no technical differentiation between paid and free users.

-Paid users are assured telephone support. We were unable to get anyone via their telephone support numbers with paid accounts. We called the US helpdesk and waited on hold for 43 minutes before giving up. Thinking it might have just been a bad day for Google (there were no outages those days), we called the UK support number. We were unable to raise any support after 37 minutes on hold via their UK-based number either. It seems they do not answer their phones.

-Users are required to verify their personal or corporate domains. This is a bit of a pain and something you see at no other major web hosting company. This verification could be seen as a security tactic, but it seems a silly exercise as only domain administrators can control access to their domains by changing their DNS through their registrars..

-Deleted mail is not actually deleted. For a simple test, if you delete a message and empty it from your trash, you will intermittently find that your deleted mail comes up with a search on a word such as ‘the’ or some other content of a message.

-The user interface is simple, however everything you want to do seems to open another browser window. As a user, it is easy to get lost in the browser windows.

-In their T&Cs, there is no assurance that your data will be completely deleted from their systems even if you delete your data.

-The system slow for users in Japan. Upon a bit of checking, we found that there is no Google Apps/Gmail data in Japan. All of the data is in the United States.

-There is only one person in the Google Japan office supporting Google Apps. He is a sales manager and not doing support only promotion. When we met him, he was unwilling to give any comment to help clarify any of our questions raised other than describing how secure Google datacenters in the US were.

-Google also keeps track of every IP address you access their service from. Whether it be access via browser or IMAP. If you access from home, they have your home IP and your corporate IP. If you use Google for web search (their service is definitely still the best at this time), then they can aggregate that information with your websearch profile to your email content thereby knowing a lot more about you or your users than you may want them to know.

Conclusions-
From our research on the net and testing, Google is providing this service for a specific reason.  It seems they want your data as they encourage you not to delete anything (presumably so that you can search it later).  Google wants to know everything about you so they can serve adverts to you.  The more they know about you, the more accurate advertising they can serve up.  Privacy experts show concern that this data will be aggregated and compiled regarding you.  For a corporation Google Apps/Gmail has some areas to improve;

-There is no live customer support or telephone support is available. All support is via their website. Basically, if there is no support as there is no one to call. Not a comforting word for corporations.

-Blackberry Enterprise Server is ‘technically’ supported, but in actuality you still have to get a BES server locally as they do not provide this as a part of their service. Why would an organization host (or outsource) your email just to install a BES server at your office?

-Google should clarify what they are doing with your data and why they don’t promise to delete your data from their system when you or your users do.

-All your data is in the United States. That means, no how matter how advanced the Data Centre is, your data can be subpoenaed by any lawyer in the US or the US government itself.

One security and privacy expert has described Google Apps as a basket of eggs. With all that data and personal information in once place, it would be a prime target for someone to break into. Our conclusion is if you have no budget, Google Apps/Gmail might be the choice for you as it is basically free (if you don’t mind seeing a bit of advertising). However, if the content of your email is important, private, or sensitive, you may need to confirm with your corporate lawyer regarding the location of your data.
Once Google can allay the fears data jurisdiction, implement proper Customer Service for paying clients, and clarify what they are doing with your data, Google Apps could become a serious service to consider.

They are an excellent company with its roots in advertising, so customer support may not be their area of expertise, however if they can get some firepower behind this service and clarify their intentions they could become a force to be reckoned with. Until then, we recommend you continue to use Google for what they are great at… web search. You can easily switch web search providers, but if your communications and email is locked in a proprietary cloud in another country, web-based support may be a huge disappointment. Information Technology is still far from perfect therefore is very important to have someone responsive to call or email when there are systems troubles.

At AINEO we have been watching the rumors for a few weeks now. The announcement is finally out.

VMware has purchased Zimbra. What does this mean?

For VMware, they get an amazing product and great team of people with a complete product. Sumitomo brought Zimbra to Japan initially. I think AINEO has done a great job of getting it out there in our AINEO Secure product line. AINEO migrated all of our hosted Microsoft Exchange servers and partner users to Zimbra. The best technical and business decision we could have every made. We gain more and more users each month and don’t have all the unnecessary instability of MS Exchange 2007.

Back in the 1990s Sun Microsystems was saying the Network is the computer. Not until 2008, when we began this service, did we really see that. With Zimbra in our datacenter, it no longer matters if you are on a windows machine or an Apple Mac. Even LINUX desktop users are able to do their job on their Unbuntu machines. Whatever you want to do can be done with MS Outlook (if you like) or better yet, on any machine with a browser.

The sale of Zimbra continues to bring concern for the future of Yahoo. Google needs a good competitor, but outsourcing their search to Microsoft was probably a nail in Yahoo’s coffin from what we gather from experts. Yahoo seems to be a fading star that just could not reinvent itself. We really hope not. We hope Yahoo can pull themselves back into a competitive state. Is it true that the Yahoo CEO is selling her stock? We hope not as that is really bad for internal morale. Well, we wish Yahoo the best, they made a very good choice in purchasing Zimbra.

VMware should be able to bring Zimbra to the next level as VMware is a great company owned by storage giant EMC.We have spent a few hours with the EMC CEO were very impressed with his understanding of his business. VMware was a great purchase on the part of EMC. Zimbra is another good choice on the purchase of VMware. Go Zimbra!

For years, most of us PC users have been paying 35 to 50 USD a year (3-5,000 yen) to protect your PCs against viruses. The answer has been a resounding ‘YES’! If you are a Mac user, you were usually just smiling as Apple’s OSX seems to be less popular to attack so there was no reason to worry. Recently, things have changed.

The market leader for security software has been Symantec’s Norton Antivirus. Other players are AVG, Kapersky, McAfee, and products from our local provider Trend Micro (the name depends on the market, Virus Buster in Japan). Using a PC wisely (link to steps) always required you to have AV (antivirus software on your PC.

In 2009, Microsoft has released a product called Microsoft Security Essentials. The application is free and is managed and updated daily. As personal AV licenses have expired over the last 10 months, I have replaced the software with MSE.

What do you think?
We have worked with AV at AINEO for 12 years. It is a pain as we have had Symantec mess up some Microsoft Exchange services when the server applications quarantined the whole mail store for Exchange and took the mail server offline. That was the end of Symantec on any mail servers at AINEO. Overall, we have found Symantec to be generally good. We have also had good experiences with AVG.

With MSE, you can stop spending money on AV software and do some other things. As we are all purchasing MS software it is nice to have the supplier provide support against security and virus risks that we have from using their software.

The big thing now is that Trend Micro, Symantec, MacAfee, and the others are going to look for other sources of revenue. If you are using MSE, you don’t need to buy their products.

If you haven’t checked out Microsoft Security Essentials, we recommend you give it a shot. Our internal tests showed it effective and actively supported by MS. Yes, you still need to have AV on your Windows computers, but at least now you don’t have to pay for it.

The end of the year is a great time for charities. In all the Christmas and New Year spirit, people are wanting to do something good. There are so many great groups providing support to the community you can find some good places to give into. However, you need to be aware that there are people out there that are looking to take advantage of that giving spirit.

Life is about giving. Money is just a tool in life but when it comes to giving, it is really like you are investing. What you give seems to come back to you. This is why it is really important to give into places that are truly making a difference. You need to make sure the people that use the finances you give them wisely and transparently. AINEO is actively supporting several non-profit organizations in Japan and abroad.

When looking for a charity to ‘invest’ into, here are some things you should consider.

1) Are they an approved non-profit where they operate?

2) Do they have some type of leadership board?

3) Are they transparent with their financial statements?

4) Is the organization an active team of volunteers or a one-man band?

5) Do they have a good reputation?

In Tokyo, we have many organizations. We have found both religious (predominantly Christian) and a few secular based groups both good and somewhat questionable.

For example, there is one ‘organization’ run by an American who has a bit of a reputation for soliciting donations from large MNCs and threatening other charities that come into his space, all the while claiming to be a ‘Christian’ relief organization. It is great to help foreigners with visa issues and various other troubles, but a lone-wolf claiming to be an organization that stirs up trouble in the community would probably not be a good investment for your charity giving. Your giving should be something that lasts and affects the community in a good way.

On the other side of the coin, there are other organizations run by some solid people with volunteer boards from the corporate world. They are audited for how they manage their income and expenses, they have solid corporate and community support, and have very obvious fruit of their work helping people. You can use this test essentially in any country of the world (with the exception of countries that deny there are any social issues in their societies). Some well-known groups in Japan that pass the 5 tests of finding a solid charity are TELL (Tokyo English Life Line) and Second Harvest

You definitely want to be careful about where you do your charity work. Just like you want to be careful about where you buy your car or spend any of your hard earned finances. Focus on the positives and avoid the negatives. Choose wisely and carefully consider those organizations.. The more people give into solid charity, the better world we will have.
